Coleman backs Woodburn for greatness

Aaron Ramsey is set to feature after suffering a kick to the calf in Arsenal's 4-0 defeat to Liverpool on Sunday

Woodburn shot to prominence with a superb victor in Saturday's 1-0 defeat of Austria, the substitute's goal preserving his side's hopes of qualifying for next year's World Cup. It is a great feeling.

Wales coach Chris Coleman says that he was always confident that Liverpool starlet Ben Woodburn would opt to play for Wales rather than England. "He's made a good start".

The defeat leaves Austria five points behind the Republic with three group games remaining, starting with Tuesday's home fixture with Georgia.

"The ball just came out of the air and I just tried to shoot it as quickly as I could", Woodburn told Sky Sports, after becoming Wales' second-youngest goalscorer in history at 17 years and 322 days, behind only Bale.

Wales were unlucky not to extend their lead with Bale going close with a spectacular scissor-kick while Hal Robson-Kanu hit the outside of the post in the final moments of the match.

"It was as poor as we have been for some time but it was still 0-0".

"Jurgen Klopp has been absolutely fantastic with him (telling him) "not too much too soon", "be patient and your time will come and then you have to take your chance".

That's a result that keeps Chris Coleman's men third in Group D - four points behind leaders Serbia ahead of a trip to Moldova on Tuesday evening.

Asked if Woodburn was one England missed out on, Southgate said: "Well, I mean I am responsible for most things but not responsible for that specific (case)".

"I put him on to add something to us, and he certainly did that". But the second 45 minutes is more like a performance from this Welsh team that we are used to seeing.

After being outplayed in the first half, the 2016 Euro semi-finalists were much improved in the second-half.
