North Korea: Missile Launch Was a 'Prelude' to a Guam Attack

US stocks join global losses after North Korea missile test

The launch represented a major escalation by Pyongyang in the face of tensions over its weapons programs, which have seen it threaten to send a salvo of missiles towards the US territory of Guam and prompted President Donald Trump to warn of "fire and fury".

Experts say Kim is clearly seeking a real nuclear deterrent against the United States to ensure the survival of his government and likely believes that will strengthen his negotiating position when North Korea returns to talks.

This came a day after President Donald Trump declared that "talking is not the answer" on North Korea.

On Monday, North Korea launched an intermediate range ballistic missile over Japan, triggering warnings to Japanese residents to take cover before the missile splashed down in the Pacific Ocean.

The U.S. and South Korean militaries very much work together where this possibility is concerned; they are now undertaking joint exercises in the South in order to prepare for such event.

Mrs May told journalists that the United Kingdom would "continue to work with our worldwide partners" to pressure Kim Jong Un's regime to end its "illegal tests".

DONALD Trump heightened fears of a nuclear showdown with North Korea after tweeting "talking is not the answer" to dealing with the regime.

While some experts hint that the conflicting messages coming from the White House may be part of U.S. strategy to increase pressure on North Korea, one former U.S. official told CNN the administration's signals are too incoherent for that to be likely.

"Even nations such as China and Russian Federation have, diplomatically at least, turned on North Korea".

Speaking in Kyoto, the prime minister also called on China to step up its action against Pyongyang and refused to rule out British military action to stop North Korea's illegal weapons testing programme.

O'Shaughnessy, the commander of U.S. Pacific Air Forces. The missile test rattled a region increasingly concerned about North Korea's fast-advancing missile capabilities and its increasingly bold way of demonstrating them.

"Their outrageous act of firing a missile over our country is an unprecedented, serious and grave threat and greatly damages regional peace and security", he told reporters in Tokyo on Tuesday.

But in Washington, top US officials have reiterated that the United States is seeking a diplomatically led effort with North Korea.

"North Korea represents an undeniable threat to worldwide peace and security".
