SC couple files suit against Amazon over eclipse glasses

Amazon recalls potentially hazardous solar eclipse glasses

Amazon has been subject to a proposed class action lawsuit by Corey Payne and Kayla Harris, claiming defective eclipse glasses purchased through the online retailer damaged their eyes.

Corey Payne and Kayla Harris alleged in a lawsuit filed this week that they experienced headaches, eye-watering, and distorted and blurry vision after watching the total solar eclipse on August 21.

Shares of Amazon were climbing 1% higher in Thursday morning trading.

"B$3 oth plaintiffs began to see dark spots in their line of vision, suffered vision impairment, including blurriness, a central blind spot, increased sensitivity, changes in perception of color, and distorted vision", the lawsuit says.

The legal action comes only a little more than a week after the 21 August total solar eclipse, and a little more than two weeks after Amazon sent out a highly publicised email warning customers about potentially unsafe glasses.

Both Payne and Harris used the glasses to view a total solar eclipse - when the sun, moon and earth line up at precisely the same time - on August 21.

The Solar Eclipse swept across US on August 21 and hordes of people gathered to watch it and a number of them had purchased the glasses, which make Eclipse-viewing safe, from Amazon. The online retailer attempted to recall the glasses on or about August 19 "out of an abundance of caution" via email to its purchasers, offering a refund to affected customers. But such poor-quality eclipse glasses could've caused headaches and eye damage to the wearer. They claim the Seattle-based company was negligent and are asking for an unspecified monetary award for damages. The South Carolina couple's lawyers did not respond to a request for comment.

But Harris and Payne claim that they never received any such email from Amazon and also said that they'll be representing all the people who suffered injuries by this fraudulent sale.

Payne and Harris said they did not receive notice of the recall.
