Texas Store Sold Gas At $20 Per Gallon Following Hurricane Harvey

And the state has the authority to prosecute any business engaging in price gouging after a disaster is declared by the governor.

Thousand of Texans have been displaced by Hurricane Harvey's floods, and adding to their worries - convenience stores selling gas for as much $20 per gallon. "We expect more complaints in the wake of the storm regarding home fix and construction fraud/price gouging".

His office website has gone viral for its warning to consumers to "be on your guard".

In fact, in Texas, price gouging can carry a fine up to $20,000 per occurrence, or up to $250,000 if the victim is someone age 65 or older.

"These are things you can't do in Texas", Paxton told CNBC on Tuesday.

A leading electronics chain has been accused of "price gouging" after one of its shops in Texas was caught selling cases of bottled water for over $42 (£32) as Hurricane Harvey raged in nearby Houston. Now, in the middle of this massive crisis, the Texas Attorney General says he's already received over 600 reports of price gouging.

"We expect more complaints in the wake of the storm regarding home fix and construction fraud/price gouging", said Kayleigh Lovvorn, who works in media relations in the Texas Attorney General's office.

The AG's office encourages individuals who believe goods are being charged at an unfairly high price to first raise the issue directly with the business.

Reporter Ken Klippenstein posted a photo to Twitter showing cases of water being dramatically priced up at a Houston Best Buy, with one case being sold for more than $40, Daily Mail reports. One of the cases was being sold for $42 when it normally retailed for about $15.

Best Buy said in a statement it was "a big mistake" made by a few of its employees.

Meanwhile, some businesses sold water bottles for $8.50 each and cases for $99, Lovvorn said.
