Million CeX Customers Affected in 'Sophisticated' Data Breach

CeX data breach impacts two million UK accounts

Second-hand games and gadget retailer Cex has reported that a breach of their online security has resulted in customer data being stolen, potentially affecting up to two million customers. Leaked details include full names, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses and encrypted but expired credit/debit card information.

Cex says a "small amount" of encrypted data from expired credit and debit cards could have been compromised, but this would be out of date as it stopped storing financial data in 2009.

Data breaches have affected a number of online retailers in the past and they could be subject to larger fines in the future once the EU's GDPR legislation comes into force in 2018.

'Together we have implemented additional advanced measures of security to prevent this from happening again'.

Customers who have used webuy.com are advised to change their account passwords immediately, and then to change similar passwords across their accounts. CEX is recommending customers change their password on the site as soon as possible, along with changing passwords to any other accounts that share the same email and password combination. I think so. Personal information like that which has been exposed by this security breach could be exploited by criminals.

The firm didn't disclose many more details of the breach as it is still working with the relevant authorities to help their investigation.

Cex, which has more than 300 stores across the United Kingdom where people can trade in old games and gadgets, said it is working with police following the hack.

CeX has been at the forefront of security, being one of the first major retailers to accept Bitcoin, but has also been accused in the past of selling devices with users' data still intact.

'It's surprising that Cex still stored customer card details prior to 2009, ' Javvad Malik, from security firm AlienVault, told BBC News.
