Bawana Bypoll: AAP's Ram Chander defeats BJP's Ved Prakash by 24052 votes

Bawana bypoll

With many surveys claiming that AAP's popularity has taken a dip, the Bawana by-election result was being seen as a defining test for the party as well as its leader and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

While supporters of the saffron party would not want too much to be read into such a disappointing defeat, the celebrations of their party's victory in Goa by-polls along with the nature and margin of the defeat in Delhi make, giving attention to AAP's victory logical.

The AAP has won this seat again, but it has lost nearly 50,000 votes in just two years in the constituency.

In Valpoi, the bypoll was held following the resignation of Rane as a Congress MLA.

Predictably, Parrikar is selling the bypoll victory as an "endorsement" of his government. He is expected to resign from the Rajya Sabha next week.

Chodankar said he may have lost the polls, but he was touched by the manner in which Panaji voters had interacted with him.

Congress won only 7.87 percent of votes in the 2015 assembly polls.

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is leading with more than 17000 votes against the Congress and Bharatiya Janata Paraty (BJP) in Bawana where the counting is underway for the by-election results. Chief minister Manohar Parrikar managed to retain the Panaji seat that he had won five times previously and has been with the BJP for 23 years. The Congress was a distant third with just 1,382 votes, still reeling from public anger over bifurcation of the state.

Ram Chandra won 59,886 votes against 35,834 votes for Ved Prakash.

"The by-elections are a moral defeat for BJP, as their candidates indulged in corrupt practices as official position was used by the two candidates to offer jobs to the voters", said Goa Pradesh Congress Committee president Shantaram Naik while addressing a press conference in Panaji. But the "anti-Ved Prakash" votes, as one senior leader put it, did not end up transferring to the Congress. On Monday, the Congress led in the first seven rounds of counting, winning in the rural parts of the constituency.

Andhra Pradesh's ruling Telugu Desam Party (TDP) snatched the Nandyal Assembly seat by defeating YSR candidate with a huge margin. Brahmananda Reddy polled 97,076 votes while Silpa Mohan Reddy secured 69,610 votes.

About 80 percent of the 2.16 lakh voters cast their votes in the bypoll held August 23. Rane left the Congress and joined the BJP to become the health minister in the Parrikar cabinet.
