Olympic runner David Torrence died in the swimming pool

Olympian David Torrence Found Dead Monday in Scottsdale

Torrence was born in Okinawa, Japan and grew up in Los Angeles, but he competed at the 2016 Rio Olympics for Peru, his mother's native country.

His body was found in a pool in an apartment complex in Scottsdale, Arizona, on Monday morning. There were no immediate signs of foul play, police said. City firefighters said Torrence was pronounced dead at the scene.

After news of Torrence's tragically premature death came to light, the athletics world paid tribute.

"Today we lost an unbelievable athlete and an even greater friend", fellow runner Kyle Merber tweeted Monday night.

"The track world lost a great friend and athlete today", USA Track and Field wrote on Twitter.

That last reference is to the Hoka One One Long Island Mile - a race that Torrence won previous year - and that Merber says will now be renamed to honor its two-time champion and record holder.

The Peruvian-American Olympic 5000m runner was 31-years-old, reports the Guardian.

A native of California, Torrence won silver for the US at the World Relay Championships in 2014 and finished second at the Pan American Games in 2015.

He was in Arizona on a training camp.

Torrence began his career competing for the United States, and held the national record for the indoor 1000m, which he set in 2014 and still stands.

He was involved in the investigation into Somalian coach Jama Aden, who was arrested by Spanish police a year ago as part of a probe into doping.
