Did Fitbit Steal a March on Apple's Just-Announced Product Launch?

Meet Ionic, Fitbit's First Smartwatch and Last Chance to Beat Apple

If you somehow missed it, the Ionic was unveiled as Fitbit's first ever smartwatch.

Fitbit acquired Pebble and its "key assets" for around $40 million previous year.

Perhaps most significantly, the Fitbit Ionic promises four days of battery life on a single charge.

It also has a new SpO2 sensor, which Fitbit said makes it possible to gain deeper health insights by tracking conditions like sleep apnea.

The Ionic includes Global Positioning System tracking, a SpO2 sensor (to estimate blood oxygen levels), water resistance (up to 50 meters), contactless mobile payments through a new Fitbit Pay service, music playback, and improved heart rate tracking.

The $299.95 Ionic is available for preorder now through Fitbit.com and will reach stores in October.

Fitbit is partnering with Adidas to deliver a Fitbit Ionic special edition device and training programs in 2018. This web-based SDK (software development kit) enables anyone to create apps - or at least create their own watch faces - using JavaScript, CSS and SVG. It is available for presale today on Fitbit.com for $129.95 Dollars and will be available with more retailers this Fall. In addition to the Ionic watch, Fitbit is also releasing its Flyer wireless headphones and introducing a Wi-Fi-compatible scale, the Aria 2, along with a new premium guidance and coaching service. At launch, the service will support cards from American Express, Visa, and American Express, but Fitbit says it will be adding more credit and debit cards in the near future. Fitbit is building upon the Pebble platform to provide developer tools such as fast development on an open platform using JavaScript and Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG).

The "How We Will Pay" study* finds the majority of consumers want their wearables to allow them to make everyday purchases, in a safe and seamless way. Details are sketchy at this point, but this is new for Fitbit. However, in comparison to the Blaze, the Fitbit Ionic comes across as a tremendous improvement.

Together, these two features - Fitbit Pay and dedicated music support - will, according to Fitbit, will allow users to leave their smartphones at home when they go for a workout.

It's been known for some time that Fitbit was working hard on a smartwatch, and while delays had reportedly dragged out the launch, the time for waiting is now over.

At least the Ionic is a much better-looking device than its predecessor, the Blaze.

The Ionic goes on sale on Monday for presale, and it will arrive in retail stores in October 2017. With a body made of light-weight aluminium and features that include Wi-Fi and Global Positioning System on-board, the device will seem like a promising prospect for those looking to get a quality product. There is also a $60 2-year protection plan. It features a color, spherical glass touchscreen display with a brightness of up to 1,000 nits and is offered in a range of styles and colors (such is also the case with the bands).

With a almost 165-foot (50 meter) water-proofing, the Fitbit Ionic is a flawless tool for swimmers.
