Will Trump Pardon 'America's Best-Known Racial Profiler'?

Latino Victory Project: No pardon for Sheriff Joe Arpaio

At least one question - whether Trump would pardon Joe Arpaio, the controversial former Arizona sheriff who was convicted of contempt by a federal judge last month - appeared to be answered before Trump touched down in the Grand Canyon state.

Nearby schools and more than a dozen local businesses are closing early Tuesday to avoid traffic or other problems, but a downtown group said most businesses were expected to handle it like any other day.

"In the hours before the Trump rally in Phoenix, we will make clear that we will not accept the false equivalency between neo-Nazis and peaceful protesters who oppose hate", wrote the event organizers on Facebook.

Trump's rally in Arizona has been condemned by Phoenix's mayor, and advocates say Trump is only coming to Arizona to push his anti-immigrant agenda and stoke fears against immigrant communities, whom he routinely characterizes as violent criminals. Many in the crowd wore Trump pins, "Make America Great Again" hats and shirts bearing images of the Statue of Liberty shirts and American flag. Scarpinato said in a statement that he's focused on working with law enforcement to ensure a safe event in downtown Phoenix for all involved.

Phoenix Police Chief Jeri Williams has repeatedly promised that "maximum staffing" will be deployed at the event and noted Phoenix's partnerships with the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force and the Arizona Counter Terrorism Information Center. Let's not forget that on August 31, 2016 Trump went there to deliver a dark and nativist immigration speech.

However, when reached Monday Arpaio said he had not been invited by the campaign and planned to watch the rally from home.

Ward planned to attend Trump's rally, sparking talk that the president could take the politically extraordinary step of endorsing her from the stage over an incumbent Republican senator.

While there is no way of knowing exactly what the president will say, there are already troubling omens that he will do something to set off yet another firestorm of controversy.

Mario H. Lopez, a former George W. Bush official and president of the conservative Hispanic Leadership Fund, said he has personally spoken to Latinos who were wrongly rounded up by Arpaio, and said Republican language on the "rule of law" doesn't work if Trump undermines it with regards to Arpaio. "I'm sure they have their reasons", Arpaio said on the phone.

"He's not in a position where he can have another big failure publicly, and that's the big risk", he said.

But White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters during Trump's flight that he would take no action Tuesday on Arpaio.

On Monday, while addressing the nation on his new military strategy in Afghanistan, Trump made another attempt to end criticism of his Charlottesville response.

On Twitter last Thursday, Trump bashed Flake as "toxic" and a "non-factor in the Senate".

Gallego is anxious that Trump will go through with it because "he knows the white nationalists are really pissed off because he just fired the head white nationalist in Steve Bannon".

He urged his friends and fellow students to express their First Amendment rights, but not to provoke the other side.
