Nasa unveils stunning images of once-in-a-lifetime total solar eclipse

Monday morning from the summit of Pikes Peak shortly after sunrise looking east toward Colorado Springs

Americans found themselves gazing upwards on Monday when a total eclipse swept over the country.

"Millions of people saw #Eclipse2017 but only six people saw the umbra, or the moon's shadow, over the United States from space today", NASA tweeted from the International Space Station account.

It wasn't just the moon getting in the way of the sun on Monday. He soon managed to capture a silhouette of the ISS passing in front of the sun at the time of the eclipse.

While everybody got their safety goggles in order, astronauts on the International Space Station undeniably had the best seats in the house.

The path of totality stretched from Lincoln Beach, Oregon to Charleston, South Carolina, NASA reports.

The crew, who make up Expedition 52, consist of NASA astronauts Peggy Whitson, Jack Fischer, and Randy Bresnik; Russian cosmonauts Fyodor Yurchikhin and Sergey Ryazanskiy; and ESA (European Space Agency) astronaut Paolo Nespoli. Although we don't think those are proper eclipse glasses.

In what might be the greatest photobomb of all time, the International Space Station (ISS) hovered its way into a stunning image of the total solar eclipse.

The astronauts have been briefed about which windows to look through to see the moon's shadow on Earth and the moon covering up the sun.
