Donald Trump Applauds Boston Protesters 'Speaking Out Against Bigotry And Hate'

Thousands of counter-demonstrators converged on Boston Saturday in protest at a planned'Free Speech Rally involving white nationalists

Thousands of anti-racism demonstrators flooded the streets of Boston Saturday, dwarfing a gathering of white nationalists in the city and triggering scuffles with police but avoiding the serious violence that marred a similar event a week earlier in Virginia. The conservative march disbanded after about an hour and the demonstrators were escorted away by police.

Officials estimated that the turnout came to about 40,000 demonstrators.

Trump unexpectedly praised the counter-protesters after he criticized many of them as "anti-police agitators". "Our country will soon come together as one!"

The self-described free speech rally and counter-protest march brought thousands of people to the streets of Boston, a lot of them there to speak out against hate and racism.

Of the 27 arrests Police Commissioner William Evans said that most were for disorderly conduct. "No KKK. No racist USA" and "Americans against hate".

The organiser of the far-right rally said that the event and its speakers were defending the First Amendment and freedom of expression. "We are out here to add an extra body to add to the numbers of those who resist".

Footage from the rally showed counter-protesters chasing a man with a Trump campaign banner and cap, swearing and shouting at him.

There was a large police presence in the area, and heavy trucks and concrete barriers were used to block vehicle access.

The group said they were not affiliated with last week's Charlottesville rally in any way and their group had nothing to do with racism or white nationalism. He later issued a specific condemnation of the white nationalists, but continued to equate their actions with those of the counterprotesters.

The city's Democrat mayor, Marty Walsh, shared his thoughts on the small rally and the surrounding counter marches, which he himself joined. During a press conference Tuesday that was supposed to focus on infrastructure, the president said there were "very fine people" on both sides of the protests. "I want to thank all the people that came out to share that message of love, not hate".

It's a great feeling watching Nazis and white supremacists fail.

The protest was one of several scheduled to take place across the United States this weekend. The US needs people such as Kelly, Mattis and national security adviser HR McMaster "to right the ship", he said.
