United States beat Europe to retain Solheim Cup

The United States claimed its first Solheim Cup victory on home soil since 2009 on Sunday, thoroughly dismantling the European team en-route to an emphatic 16½-11½ win at Des Moines Golf and Country Club.

The U.S. holds a 7.5 to 4.5 lead through Saturday morning's matches.

From the moment the U.S. swept through the Friday afternoon fourballs in last week's match at Des Moines Golf and Country Club it was hard to see anything other than a home victory. "It's just an honor to captain this team, and I'm really honored to captain these girls".

"We had great preparation. We had lots of banter and played lots of ping pong".

Angel Yin looked like she would complete the hosts' victory but the 18-year-old bogeyed the 17th and halved her match with France's Karine Icher, but with the USA ahead in other matches it was enough to confirm they would retain the cup.

For Kerr, who leaves Iowa the all-time American leader with 21 Solheim Cup points, Inkster coaxes unselfish acts out of golfers in what usually is a selfish sport.

Afterward, with a vodka-cranberry drink planted firmly in hand, Lincicome went through her round, although she left it to Lang to remember the lengths of each of Lincicome's six consecutive birdie putts.

Georgia Hall has been a shining light for the European side and now faced the experienced Paula Creamer.

Sadly, with the United States of America leading 10 ½ - 5 ½ heading into the Singles, the result was a foregone conclusion.

History would have to be rewritten for the European team to win the Solheim Cup.

"I was just, like, 'I just have to go all in and go for it all, '" Thompson said. "It's probably fitting they both got half a point".

"I'm proud of them", added Sorenstam.

At one point, that strategy looked like it might backfire. Lexi Thompson struggled early to try and set a tone, falling 4 down through nine holes to Sweden's Anna Nordqvist.

Nordqvist made a blistering start, winning the first four holes - two with birdies and two gifted to her as the American was all over the place. "That's all I could do".

After reaching the final of the U.S. Amateur along with Doc Redman on Saturday, he is nearly certain to get an invitation to play at Augusta next year.

Sunday's first match out proved an example of the fire that US captain Juli Inkster's team demonstrated all week.

They reached the 14-1/2 points needed for an outright win when Lizette Salas sank a par putt at the 18th for a 1 up win over Jodi Ewart Shadoff of England.

Anna Nordqvist, who played through glandular fever to an unbeaten record, admitted she was "pretty exhausted" after playing in four of five sessions.

"To secure the point that wins us the Solheim Cup is unbelievable", said Salas.

But if this were to be played this week, the Internationals team would feature 12 players all ranked in the world's top 15, so I'm not so sure the Americans would be overly keen to contest this one just yet!
