Putin names new Russian ambassador to US

Donald Trump Vladimir Putin

Russian President Vladimir Putin has appointed Anatoly Antonov to replace Sergey Kislyak as Russia's ambassador to the United States following visa row.

The appointment was announced on the Kremlin website on August 21. He is seen as a hardliner towards the U.S.

Antonov still technically is a general in the Russian Army, holding the equivalent of the US military's five-star rank, but has worked in Putin's government for the past six years.

The outgoing ambassador played a prominent role in the controversy over Russia's possible involvement in the 2016 US presidential election.

Kislyak has been a central figure in the U.S. Russian Federation investigations - because he met with several of President Donald Trump's representatives before, during and after the November presidential election.

Kislyak has been at the eye of the storm over his meetings with senior campaign aides to Donald Trump during the presidential race.

Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told a news conference the US decision to cut visa operations aims well known to make Russians feel resentment towards their government.
