Yemen facing 'triple tragedy' of conflict, cholera, famine, United Nations says

Yemen humanitarian crisis: How cholera outbreak is adding to country's woes

Secretary-General Antonio Guterres says in a draft report that the Saudi-led coalition was responsible for more than half the children killed and injured in Yemen's civil war past year.

Saudi Arabia's U.N. Mission said in a statement that the coalition maintains its position "that there is no justification whatsoever for including its name in the annex of the secretary-general's report on children and armed conflict". It also noted that the Saudi coalition had bombing at least 28 schools over the time.

Top United Nations officials on Friday warned violence in Yemen was worsening and greater access was needed to the Houthi rebel-held north, particularly through the key Red Sea port of Hodeidah. The coalition was briefly added previous year and then removed by then-U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon pending a review. Despite the successful interception, the launching of this missile, which made it 43 miles south of Mecca, illustrates the extent to which Saudi Arabia and its regional allies have failed to achieve a key objective in their war in Yemen: to deprive the Houthi militants of the means to threaten Saudi national security with heavy weaponry and missiles sourced domestically and overseas. It declined to comment on the findings in the draft report for 2016.

Last year, the United Nations capitulated to Saudi Arabia's demands and took the country out of its annual report on children and armed conflict.

Since the beginning of the Saudi war on Yemen in March 2015, which was carried out in an attempt to crush the popular Houthi movement and reinstall the former president, Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi, a staunch ally of Riyadh, Saudi warplanes have pounded the nation day and night, killing over 12,000 people, including many women and children, and displacing over three million others.

"It is simply wrong to insist these cargoes go to Aden, not Hodeidah", O'Brien told the U.N. Security Council, appealing for countries to back a U.N. mechanism that started inspecting commercial shipments to rebel-held ports in May a year ago.
