Young cricketer dies after being hit on head

A tweet from the PCB seemed to indicate that Zubair may have been batting without a helmet

Zubair, a passionate cricketer from Katlang area of Mardan, was a student of intermediate and a regular visitor to Sir Nazim Cricket Academy, where he used to spend time doing training and net practice.

Pakistan cricketer Zubair Ahmed passed away on Wednesday after being hit on the head by a bouncer at a match in Mardan. The young cricketer played List A matches along with representing T20 team Quetta Bears.

Reports from Pakistan say Ahmed was hit during a match on August 14 and later died. The news of Ahmed's death was confirmed by the Pakistan Cricket Board through a tweet, which also cautioned other Pakistani cricketers to wear protective gear like helmets while batting. "Our sympathies with Zubair's family", read their tweet. PCB shared a message and cautioned cricketers about the significance of wearing a helmet at all times. "Condolences to his family".

Calls for player safety became more vocal following the tragic death of Australian batsman Phillip Hughes in 2014.

The tragic news comes 24 hours after Australian batsman David Warner sent a scare through the national squad when he too was struck by a Josh Hazlewood bouncer. However, he is recovering and is expected to be fit for Australia's tour of Bangladesh.
