The council members called on the government of Mali to swiftly investigate those attacks and bring the perpetrators to justice, said the council in a statement.

A separate attack took place against MINUSMA in Douenza, around 130 miles south of Timbuktu on Monday, killing one peacekeeper and one Malian national soldier, according to the agency.

Hours later, six men with guns and grenades drove up to the entrance of the United Nations mission in Timbuktu in northwestern Mali, the United Nations announced in a separate statement.

The UN mission said that it had deployed a rapid response force with helicopters to the scene.

The UN secretary-general's office released a statement condemning the attacks, saying that "attacks targeting United Nations peacekeepers may constitute war crimes under global law".

In Monday's attacks on the camps of the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (Minusma) in Douenza and Timbuktu in Mali, a UN peacekeeper from Togo, a Malian soldier, a member of the Malian gendarmerie as well as six Malian contractors were killed.

No claims of responsibility have been made, and no concrete link between the two attacks has yet been established.

Several terror groups are active in northern Mali, where French, Malian and United Nations peacekeepers are conducting counter-terrorism operations.

The attack in Mali took place two days after a terror attack in Ouagadougou, the capital of Burkina Faso where Gunmen killed almost 20 people and wounded several others during an overnight attack on a restaurant. The force was created to tackle the threat of terrorism and transnational organized crime.

There is no clarity on how many attackers were killed by the peacekeepers.

"He also reaffirms the Organization's commitment to the countries of the G5 Sahel as they scale up efforts to tackle multiple security challenges in order to promote peace and development in the sub-region", said his Deputy Spokesperson, Farhan Haq.
