Kenyatta declared victor of Kenyan presidential race

Police must only use force as a last resort in dealing with protests in Kenya

"The girl was on a balcony when she was hit by the stray bullet, this is in Mathare North area 2 next to soko mawe, Osiepe Bar", Achieng told Standard Digital in a phone interview.

Yet it's not clear that Odinga will readily accept the outcome, which he has vehemently protested since preliminary results for Tuesday's election began portending a Kenyatta victory.

"There are gunshots all over; we don't know how it will end but we are praying for peace", said Kisumu resident Lucas Odhiambo, adding that people were bellowing through "vuvuzela" noisemakers when the results were announced "and police moved in".

In total, 15,073,662 people cast their votes, representing 78.91 per cent of the registered voters.

"I reach out to you، I reach out to all your supporters".

"Reach out to your neighbour, shake their hand".

However, it could not say whether the election process was free, fair and credible.

However, there were also protests.

A security official said that the bodies of nine men shot dead in Nairobi's Mathare slum on Friday night were brought to the morgue on Saturday.

In Kisumu, an Odinga stronghold in the west, youths banged drums and tyres burned in the streets in the Kondele district. The coalition has so far ruled out going to court. "We have been there before", he said.

Earlier, Orengo had called for the candidates and observers to be given access to the election commission's computer servers so there could be a transparent audit of data from 41,000 polling stations across the country. On July 31, officials announced that Christopher Msando, an election official in charge of managing information technology systems, had been tortured and killed.

Normal procedure calls for the commission to release final results after cross checking electronic tallies with paper forms.

At a news conference Thursday, Odinga's camp presented alternative figures showing him leading by several hundred thousand votes - but, as NPR's Eyder Peralta notes, it did not clarify where these figures were obtained.

The election commission rejected the claims, pointing out they contained basic mathematical errors.

Kenya is the leading economy in East Africa and any instability would be likely to ripple through the region.

Kenyatta is broadly regarded as a representative of the nation's largest ethnic group of Kikuyu، while Odinga is affiliated with the Luo voting bloc، which has never won a presidential race.

Odinga who is now 72 years old and will be ineligible to contest in any future elections is ready to fight the results with everything he's got. "Violence must never be an option", he said on Friday.

The opposition says the vote was rigged.

"The observers largely served the interests of the government", Orengo said. "Politicians also come and go", he appealed to Kenyans.
