Farah denied final gold by Ethiopian Edris

Mo Farah

The Briton, who won 10,000m gold in London World Championships last weekend, was beaten by Ethiopia's Muktar Edris in the final of the 5,000m. It's not an excuse, but it took a lot more out of me than I realised. The better man won.

In the end, it was a tremendous race as Edris, Farah, Paul Kipkemoi Chelimo and Yomif Kejelcha separated themselves from the field on the back straight of an exhilarating final lap.

"I gave 110 per cent", he said in the immediate aftermath.

Then came surge after counter surge, Farah riding on the back of each one.

Farah was welcomed to the start line by another roar from the London Stadium crowd and urged them to keep going with a wave of the hand in the opening paces.

In a odd way, however, this defeat might well offer some brief respite from the shadow of doping and some of the hard questions that have come with his previously unbreakable displays of championship distance running.

The 34-year-old, whose winning run in the 5,000m at Olympics and world finals stretched back to 2011, fought desperately to claw back the deficit in the finishing straight but Edris held on to win in 13min 32.79sec.

That effort may well have taken more out of him that Farah himself had realised.

Farah still doubled Great Britain's medal tally, remaining the only GB athlete to have won any honour at the home championships.

But when he starts his career as a marathon runner, Farah will be able to reflect on having created an awesome legacy with his four Olympic and six World Championship gold medals.
