Morocco to challenge joint North American bid to host 2026 World Cup

Russia, Qatar... Morocco? African country submits 2026 World Cup hosting bid

However, Fifa past year accepted that the country had paid bribes to the former head of the North and Central American Confederation in trying to win the right to host the 1998 and 2010 tournaments - something that could prejudice any future bid.

In April, the United States, Canada and Mexico had already announced a joint North American bid to host the tournament. But FIFA chose to keep the contest open, and Morocco made the deadline - just.

Morocco on Friday launched its bid to host the FIFA World Cup in 2026. The FIFA Council rejected this request at its meeting May 9 and opened the bidding process to other countries.

In 2010, the hosting right was awarded to South Africa who remains the only African country to have hosted the World Cup.

Morocco has hosted two Club World Cup tournaments, in 2013 and 2014, although that is a vastly smaller and shorter tournament.

The 211 Member Associations will then vote on the host city of the 2026 World Cup at the June 13 Congress, well before the date in 2020 once planned for that decision.

Reinforcing the challenge of becoming only the second African nation to host a World Cup, and the first from North Africa, Morocco would also have to handle the largest World Cup ever in terms of teams.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has already given its backing to any Moroccan bid in July. Africa has the second highest number of voting Federation Internationale de Football Association member countries behind Europe. South Africa staged the first African World Cup in 2010, with Morocco having bid for the event on four previous occasions without success. Europe and Asia are the only continents excluded from 2026 given their hosting rights in 2018 (Russia) and 2022 (Qatar).
