In the United Kingdom, found eggs with toxins

Supermarkets in Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany have withdrawn millions of eggs from sale.

In large quantities, the insecticide is considered to be "moderately hazardous" according to the World Health Organization, and can have risky effects on people's kidneys, liver and thyroid glands.

British Lion Code eggs have been tested by the Food Standards Agency and have proven to be perfectly safe.

More than 700 thousand infected fipronil (insecticide, potentially unsafe for health) chicken eggs were supplied to Britain from the Netherlands, according to new data, the British Agency on standardization of food products.

The FSA insisted the recalls - which included Sainsbury and Asda salads - were not issued on food safety concerns, but because fipronil is banned from use on food-producing animals.

German supermarket chain Aldi has recalled eggs as the pesticide scandal continues to rock European food markets.

On Friday, France's Agriculture Minister Stéphane Travert said about 250,000 affected eggs had been sold in the country since April, adding that all products containing eggs from contaminated farms would be taken off the shelves.

The two suspects arrested were directors at the Dutch company Chickfriend, the company at the centre of the entire scandal, Reuters added.

The problem is believed to stem from a substance used by Dutch company Chickfriend which farmers in the Netherlands and Belgium say they hired to treat their chickens.

Heather Hancock, FSA chairman, said: 'I'm confident that acting quickly is the right thing to do.

Romania has found one tonne of egg yolk which was contaminated by fipronil in a warehouse to the west of the country. Fipronil is used to kill fleas, lice and tick in animals, but isn't allowed on those that are producing foods for human consumption.

It was previously reported that Fipronil was introduced by a Dutch company that provided sanitary services to breeders in Belgium and Netherlands, EU's biggest egg producer, who were not aware of the violations.

Belgian investigators meanwhile identified 26 people or companies as suspects during the 11 raids by police and food safety agency officers, for offences including fraud and breaking European Union food laws.
