EPS & OPS meet Modi, set to reunite this weekend — AIADMK merger

TN CM Edappadi Palanisamy sacks TTV Dinakaran from AIADMK

RECAP | Opening the doors for a possible merger of the two AIADMK factions, Chief Minister K Palaniswami-led Amma faction on Thursday challenged the authority of its Deputy General Secretary TTV Dhinakaran, a move hailed by the rebel camp as an "awakening". Describing the recent appointments made by Dhinakaran as not permissible as per rules of the party, a resolution adopted at a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Palaniswami stated that Dhinakaran's decisions would not be binding on the party members. However, she was convicted in a money laundering case and sent to jail, post which the AIADMK was split into two factions. Downplaying rebellion by former chief minister O Panneerselvam, he said some may have separated from the party but it will have no bearing on the government.

Reports say that the EPS and OPS camp will meet over the weekend and decide on the details of the merger. Panneerselvam, the then CM had pointed at Sasikala alleging her role in Jayalalithaa's death.

He also said the description of "420" (the IPC section referring to cheating) would fit T.T.V. Dinakaran - who was on Thursday sacked as the Deputy General Secretary - more. It was during his absence that EPS reportedly strengthened his position in the party and emerged as a real threat to Dinakaran. While the CM met the Prime Minister Narendra Modi briefly and also interacted with Union minister Arun Jaitley, Panneerselvam briefly greeted the PM at the event. She is barred from contesting an election for the next 10 years. More agitations, just as the one held by the party's yuva morcha recently, to ask for holding local polls and better quality of teachers in government schools are being planned. Currently, the state government has only 123 MLAs against the minimum number of 118 required to stay on in office. "But how long will they survive?"

Ever since the saddening demise of AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa, the factions of the party have been engaging in a power struggle, which is expected to come to a swift end in the anticipation of merger.

Meanwhile, the unofficial "entry" of actor Kamal Haasan into state politics, mostly seen on social media, has also added to the AIADMK's woes.
