Bills trade Sammy Watkins to Rams, add Jordan Matthews from Eagles

Bills trade Watkins to Rams get Matthews from Eagles

The trade ends a tumultuous three seasons for Watkins in Buffalo.

In a shocking pair of trades Friday, the Bills traded their top wide receiver, Sammy Watkins, and their top cornerback, Ronald Darby, in separate deals with the Los Angeles Rams and Philadelphia Eagles.

Watkins immediately becomes the highest-upside wide receiver on the Rams, who also acquired former Bills wideout Robert Woods as a free agent earlier this offseason.

But after the Bills' preseason loss to the Vikings on Thursday night, Watkins was all smiles. He had a career best 1,047 yards and nine touchdowns on 60 receptions in 13 games during the 2015 season.

For the Bills, this move was about acquiring draft picks for the future: The new regime has already chose to move on from Watkins, the prize pick of the old regime.

The Rams need playmakers for an offense that finished last in the National Football League over the past two seasons. Buffalo also received a second round draft pick in the deal while giving up a sixth round pick.

Though, when healthy, Watkins is a very unsafe deep threat. He has started 25 games for the Rams but missed the entire 2015 season. Watkins required a second operation in January after aggravating the injury last season.

The Bills still have playoff hopes, and these acquisitions aren't a step back.

The Rams clearly focused on upgrading their passing game this offseason as they hope to turn Jared Goff, the 2016 NFL Draft's No. 1 overall pick, into a franchise quarterback.

Matthews had been Philadelphia's most productive receiver, averaging 75 catches, 891 receiving yards and six touchdowns in his first three seasons.
