Armenian Families Rescued from ISIS in Syria

Syrian army closes in on IS-held town in Raqqa

The United Nations on Wednesday urged those fighting in Syria's Raqqa to remember "obligations to protect civilians", voicing concern over the tens of thousands of people still trapped without access to aid.

According to the AP report, the family left Jakarta for Raqqa two years ago, intending to live in what they had regarded as the capital of ISIS. The U.S. spokesman said this shows the steady progress the SDF fighters are making against Daesh in the militants' self-declared capital.

He said the Indonesian government in its initial discussions obtained information that the group were not fighters, some had spent most of their time in Syria in IS jails or other isolated conditions, and had fled Raqqa with the help of a third party on June 10.

Dillon says the significance is that the SDF, despite IS' best efforts, have successfully battled across the entire city from both sides and have joined forces.

The al-Qaeda-linked militant group, the Levant Liberation Committee, captured the crossing after battles with the ultraconservative Syrian rebel Ahrar al-Sham group last month.

The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces, under the cover of USA -backed coalition airstrikes, launched a wide offensive to capture the city on June 6 and have managed so far to take about half the city. "The security conditions in the area are so complex that the handling process can not be done easily", he said.

But she also cautioned about the huge number of displaced Syrians this year - almost 809,000. The Syrian government has said the U.S. forces were committing "crimes" by killing civilians on a daily basis.

The Syrian conflict began when the Baath regime, in power since 1963 and led by President Bashar al-Assad, responded with military force to peaceful protests demanding democratic reforms during the Arab Spring wave of uprisings, triggering an armed rebellion fuelled by mass defections from the Syrian army.

U.S. Army Col. Ryan Dillon tweeted that SDF forces have linked up "East-West axes" in Raqqa and are continuing to pressure IS. Last week, SDF detachments fighting to take back control of the city from IS were just 300 feet apart, Pentagon officials said.
