36 dead as trains collided in Egypt

The crash also injured 123 people the ministry said in a statement

A further 80 people were injured in the crash.

According to local authorities, a mistake by the operator of a semaphore caused the accident.

Two passenger trains collided on Friday just outside Egypt's Mediterranean port city of Alexandria, killing at least 36 people and injuring about 123, according to the Health Ministry, in the country's deadliest rail accident in more than a decade.

The deadly incident reportedly took place in the Khorshid district on Alexandria's outskirts.

Ministry spokesman Khaled Megahed told state television that more than a 100 people were also injured in the collision.

Efforts were still exerted to extradite more bodies and injured from wreckage of the two trains.

As rescue teams pulled dead and injured from the damaged rail wagons, public prosecutor Nabil Sadek ordered an urgent investigation.

Egyptians have long complained that successive governments failed to enforce basic safeguards for the railways, leading to a string of fatal crashes.

In 2013, dozens of people were killed and when a train crashed into a minibus and other vehicles south of Cairo.

In 2012, a train rammed into a school bus south of Cairo and killed 50 people, mostly children.

Train accidents in Egypt are rare but not unheard of.
