Why did Nawaz Sharif's convoy speed off ahead of the rally?

Ruling was designed for the sole purpose of disqualification claims the ousted premier

Meanwhile, another PML-N leader said Shahbaz Sharif, the former Prime Minister's brother and Punjab Chief Minister, will become the new leader of the ruling party.

Though Kalsoom Nawaz successfully led the party's movement for the release of her incarcerated husband after a military coup by Gen Musharraf in 1999, she never contested election to actively part in Pak politics. Sharif, in recent meetings with party leaders, lawyers and the media, has expressed his displeasure over the court rulings.

The system of power transfer was elaborated by Sharif's Pakistan Muslim League (N) party leadership and approved by the former prime minister. Qamar Zaman Kaira of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) said that there could be around 10,000 people with Sharif.

Sharif resigned swiftly after the Supreme Court decision, and Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, a staunch party loyalist, was appointed as his replacement last week. He also urged the cabinet ministers to fully cooperate with the Prime Minister.

The claim stems from the Panama Papers leaks in April 2016, when documents from a Panama-based law firm revealed that three of Sharif's four children owned offshore companies and assets not shown on his family's wealth statement.

Despite the heat and humidity, hundreds of people walked for about 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) with Sharif's slow-moving convoy, as volunteers distributed bottles of water. The minister said that the PML-N rally would be joined by the people as it would pass through different cities.

Thousands of Sharif's supporters gathered in Islamabad on Wednesday to accompany him on the 370km journey, bringing the commercial heart of the capital to a virtual standstill. "When will the people's mandate be respected?" Sharif has resumed a long road trip back to his hometown, Lahore, via the Grand Trunk (GT) Road after an overnight stay in Rawalpindi as his procession enters its second day on the streets. "It is the linchpin of the democratic order and oxygen for political parties", he said.

He stepped down almost an year before Pakistan would have participated in the scheduled general elections.
