Three LUTH workers test positive for LASSA Fever

Nigerian hospital intensifies Lassa fever surveillance

"It has regular supply of electricity and water, fully air conditioned and we follow global standard procedure in attending to the patients", he said.

Kawuwa told newsmen in Damaturu that seven people were initially held, but three had been discharged after clinical analysis.

"It is only when we have immediate contact that we restrict their movement".

He added that each of the cases had been managed in other facilities before they were referred to LUTH.

This is the first time Lassa fever epidemic is being reported in the security threatened north east state.

"The Centre for Disease Control (CDC) in Nigeria has also been contacted".

Disclosing these and other developments in a joint press conference of LUTH and Lagos State Ministry of Health, the Chief Medical Director, Prof Chris Bode, explained that the current outbreak was being effectively traced in the field, adding that all persons now exposed to the index cases were being effectively treated.

"One of the problem is that Lassa fever has been with us and has been recurrent and so, people are used to it; but it is not something that we should be used to", he said.

"The first was a 39-year old pregnant lady with bleeding disorder who died after a stillbirth", he said.

He also revealed that the second patient who died of the disease at the hospital was a sickle cell carrier who was admitted on August 5.

He added that the victim had just come in from a neighbouring state. "The two cases have since been buried in line with prescribed global standards", Onanuga said.

A resident doctor from the department of anatomic and molecular pathology, who took part in the autopsy, was said to have contracted the disease and was now on admission at the isolation ward of LUTH.

The Commissioner said the government had commenced preventive measures against the infection.

A patient at the State General Hospital, Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, has been placed under close observation on suspicion of suffering from the deadly and contagious Lassa Fever disease.

"There are adequate materials for containment of the disease while drugs have been made available to treat anyone confirmed with the disease".

He said the infected were being cared for by a corps of professional and volunteer doctors, nurses, pharmacists. microbiologists, epidemiologists, emotional care givers, cleaners and others round the clock.

"However, we should all be involved collectively and individually to stop further spread of this disease".

"Do not spread your food outside in the open; put food items in rat proof containers so that rats will not get access to the food".

"I urge us to prevent our food items from being contaminated by rats and rat droppings and urine". This current outbreak is effectively being monitored.

The deceased died at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, LUTH.
