Stock markets slip as North Korea tensions build

Europe: Political tensions continue to weigh on stocks

Stocks across Europe closed sharply lower Wednesday as tensions between the USA and North Korea escalated.

In the eurozone, the Paris CAC 40 lost 0.5 percent compared with the closing level on Wednesday.

London's benchmark share index closed down 45 points amid fears of a military conflict between the United States and North Korea.

The sabre-rattling - sparked when President Donald Trump stunned the world with an apocalyptic warning to unleash "fire and fury" on North Korea - continued Thursday as Pyongyang mocked the USA leader as "bereft of reason".

The jitters came as Pyongyang said it was considering plans to attack the US Pacific territory of Guam - while Donald Trump threatened to react with "fire and fury".

"The North Korea situation is still unstable and investors are controlling risk and taking profit after recent gains", said Sam Chi Yung, a Hong Kong-based strategist at South China Financial Holdings.

On the other end of the scale, bookmakers Ladbrokes Coral was bringing up the rear on the back of selling by some of its top investors, traders told Digital Look.

"If tensions between the USA and North Korea escalate further, we think that the implications for equities in South Korea and elsewhere will remain limited provided that war does not actually break out", wrote Oliver Jones, assistant economist at Capital Economics.

Back on the Stoxx 600, shares of gold miners Fresnillo PLC (FRES.LN) and Polymetal International PLC (POLY.LN) leapt 4.9% and 3.3%.

Hong Kong shed more than one percent and Shanghai also closed down, while Seoul shares continued their sell-off after slumping Wednesday, with the won again softening. That was the largest point loss for the Swiss equity benchmark since June 29.

The pound bought $1.2999, up slightly from $1.2993 late Tuesday in NY.

The FTSE 100 was 0.71 percent down at 7,488.82 points as of 12:39 BST on Wednesday, 09 August 2017.

Shares of G4S PLC (GFS.LN) fell 7.5% even as the security-services company posted a rise in first-half earnings (http://www.marketwatch.com/story/g4s-earnings-up-revenue-growth-seen-in-line-2017-08-09) and projected revenue growth will be in line with its medium-term target.
