Irritated McConnell slaps Trump for 'excessive expectations'

In a tweet on Wednesday, Trump criticized McConnell for recent remarks suggesting the president's limited political experience contributed to unreasonably high expectations for health care reform.

Just a day earlier, between raising the specter of nuclear war with North Korea and retweeting "Fox & Friends" news reports about the escalating tensions on the peninsula, the president goaded McConnell over comments he made to a rotary club meeting in Kentucky days earlier.

Trump later implied the Senate's top Republican should step aside if he can't pass Trump's legislative agenda during a press conference.

Republican senators are on defense this month in their districts after the Obamacare repeal disaster that Trump has distanced his administration from.

Another thing making the Trump-McConnell spat complicated - McConnell's wife, Elaine Chao, is the president's Secretary of Transportation.

On Wednesday, Trump pushed back against McConnell's characterizations.

'Part of the reason I think people think we're under-performing is because of too many artificial deadlines unrelated to the reality of the legislature which may have not been understood, ' McConnell said Tuesday.

"The leader has spoken repeatedly about the path forward regarding Obamacare repeal on the Senate floor, at media availabilities multiple times and in Kentucky", said spokeswoman Antonia Ferrier in an email.

The exchanges likely will not help relations between the president and Republican senators.

"It isn't unreasonable to expect Republicans to keep their promises and McConnell's excuse is yet another example of why he should be replaced as the Republican leader", Mr. Cuccinelli said in an email blast.

Our president has been on something of a warpath lately, as he is looking for anyone but himself to blame for the health care debacle.

Congress left for a five-week recess last week after failing to pass a partial repeal of Obamacare.

Fourth, to the extent Trump makes Senate Republicans the enemy, he helps Democrats who, until now, were thought to have only a remote chance of winning the Senate majority.

"And the rest? They are phony baloney", Dobbs said, introducing a new slogan: "Ditch Mitch".

But at least one Congressional Republican is piling on McConnell -- Rep. Mo Brooks, R-Ala., a Trump supporter running for the Senate, who expressed shock when Trump endorsed incumbent Sen.
