North Korea releases Canadian pastor serving life sentence in prison

Rescuers carry a man injured in a landslide in Gengdi village in south-western China

Lim's release comes amid heightened tensions on the Korean Peninsula after US President Donald Trump threatened North Korea with "fire and fury" on Tuesday and Pyongyang said it was considering a military strike against the US territory of Guam.

Lim, a Reverend at the Light Presbyterian Korean Church in Toronto, was sentenced to a life of hard labor by the North Korean regime in December of 2015 for numerous charges, including attempting to overthrow the North Korean government.

But Lim isn't the only point of concern for Trudeau in dealing with North Korea, whose aim to develop nuclear missiles capable of reaching across the Pacific has Canadians anxious they are in range.

"Obviously, Pastor Lim's health and well-being remain of utmost importance to the government of Canada and we are continuing to engage on his case", said Cameron Ahmad in a statement.

There was no obvious direct connection between the release and the standoff with the United States, but North Korea has in the past attracted the attention of Washington, and visits by high-profile Americans, with the detention and release of us citizens.

"A nuclear power like North Korea that has shown a level of irresponsibility", he said, pausing for several seconds as he searched for the right words, finally continuing, "fundamental irresponsibility-to not to use a word like insane which I will not use-is a real concern". Warmbier, sentenced last year to 15 years' hard labour for trying to steal a propaganda item from his hotel, died in a Cincinnati hospital days after being released in a coma.

The 62-year-old was in poor health and wrote letters to his friends stating he had stomach pain and high blood pressure. North Korean prosecutors also accused him of helping "lure and abduct" North Korean citizens, calling them defectors.

According to his family, Lim has made more than 100 trips to North Korea since 1997, and his humanitarian efforts have includedthe founding by his church of a nursery, orphanage, and nursing home in the northeastern city of Rajin.

Past year he was digging holes for eight hours a day in a labour camp, but claimed he was the "sole prisoner" when he spoke to CNN.

Tensions between North Korea and the USA are on the rise, as North Korea has threatened to take punitive action against the U.S.in response to new sanctions, as well as other perceived provocations.
