Disney Pulling Films from Netflix, Plans Own Streaming Service

Netflix is about to lose a tonne of its best content

This means that streaming of new Disney movie releases will end with "the 2019 theatrical slate", according to Variety.

Disney reached an exclusive partnership with Netflix past year to bring Disney, Marvel, Lucasfilm, and Pixar movies to the streaming platform.

Plans are for the Disney and ESPN streaming services to be available for purchase directly from Disney and ESPN, in app stores, and from authorized MVPDs. Others, such as The Verge, suggest that the company is simply ending its distribution deal with Netflix for new releases starting in 2019.

Netflix's current stock of Disney movies includes Marvel films such as Captain America: Civil War and Doctor Strange.

Besides the new platform, Disney will also launch its in ESPM video streaming service in early 2018.

Disney's Marvel TV shows like "Luke Cage" and "Jessica Jones" are expected to remain on Netflix.

The ESPN service, for its part, will provide access to 10,000 sporting games and events annually, Deadline reports, including Major League Baseball (MLB), National Hockey League (NHL), and Major League Soccer (MLS). Disney is series about moving into consumer streaming and for that objective it has bought a majority ownership in BAMTech for $1.58 billion. In addition, the platform will also include an extensive library of catalog titles from Disney, Pixar, Disney Channel, Disney Junior, and Disney XD.

In an interview with CNBC, Iger also expanded on the plans for the streaming service outside of the US.

"The media landscape is increasingly defined by direct relationships between content creators and consumers", Iger said in a statement.

No longer content with being a substitute on the Netflix bench, Disney is going to set off on its own streaming service adventure from 2019 onwards.

Disney will take on Netflix by launching its own streaming service which will be home to all of the family favourites including Frozen, the Toy Story films, and Lion King.
