S&P, Dow hit record highs as Apple, financials climb

Wall Street had opened lower from record highs for the Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&P 500, and European equities were also lower in afternoon trading.

USA stock indexes rebounded from an early slide and were higher in midday trading.

In no particular order, here are seven Dow Jones stocks that will push the average to 25,000. Click on ticker-symbol links in each slide for current prices and more.

Robust second-quarter earnings have boosted the broader market in recent weeks and a strong July employment report on Friday added to positive sentiment.

Chief market strategist at FBN securities Jeremy Klein told CNBC that Apple's continued success was helping drive the strong earnings.

The S&P 500 climbed 0.16 percent and notched its first record close since July 26.

The S&P's consumer staples index, up 0.7 percent, and its technology index, up 0.6 percent were the benchmark's leading sectors on the day.

Avis Budget Group fell 7.94 percent as the vehicle rental company cut its full-year profit view.

Wal-Mart shares were up nearly 1 percent.

Rockwell Collins, which makes communications and avionics systems, jumped 6.8 per cent on reports United Technologies is considering a bid to buy the company.

Oil prices edged lower on Monday, sliding away from nine-week highs, as worries lingered over high production from OPEC and the United States. The Nasdaq Composite gained 0.5% to 6383.77, NOT a record high.

The S&P 500 has risen about 11 percent in 2017 despite investors losing confidence in President Donald Trump's ability to legislate his pro-growth agenda of tax cuts and infrastructure spending this year. On the Nasdaq, 1,367 issues fell and 881 advanced.

Shanghai stocks were little changed despite the disappointing Chinese trade data.
