As England look to clinch their four-match Test series against South Africa, the all-rounder leads the way with an unbeaten 75 off just 66 balls in the second innings.

He was fortunate to be dropped on 15 by Dean Elgar at slip off Maharaj but, with that let-off behind him, went on to bring up a fifty with a towering six that was caught on the players' balcony by a beaming Bairstow.

Their dual failures weren't enough to prevent England continuing to dominate the Investec Fourth Test and Joe Root's men are on course for a 3-1 series triumph. Moeen was especially severe on Maharaj, hitting him for three resounding sixes.

South Africa‚ who needed 380 to win‚ were dismissed for 202 to go down by 177 runs with Moeen Ali claiming 5/69.

But shortly before tea, with South Africa 163 for three, Amla missed an intended whip shot off Ali and was lbw, although England, for the second time Monday, had to first review umpire Kumar Dharmasena's original not out decision.

Olivier's exit meant James Anderson, was denied a maiden five-wicket Test innings haul on his Lancashire home ground.

That gave England a healthy first-innings lead of 136.

Hashim Amla was 11 not out but South Africa's hopes were disappearing fast. The Faf du Plessis-led side limped to the close on 220 for 9, still trailing by 142, with Kagiso Rabada's last-ball dismissal summing up their futile situation.

And, on a wicket showing signs or uneven bounce and turn, England's hat-trick hero from the third Test Oval win says he is ready to play an even bigger role on day four.

Dawid Malan was also dropped - a tough chance to Temba Bavuma as he ran back from point - but soon prodded the ball via bat and pad into short leg's hands off spinner Keshav Maharaj.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) have said they had not received any approach from Cricket South Africa (CSA) for Ottis Gibson amid reports he was poised to become the Proteas' new head coach.

Root (49) and Ben Stokes (23) then shared a stand of 57 before they both fell to Olivier, only playing this match after back injuries ruled out both Vernon Philander and Chris Morris. As a batting unit, we never really felt we could get on top of them.

"It is going to be hard but it should be - it's Test cricket".
