ANC to march in KwaDukuza tomorrow in support of Zuma

Regardless of National Assembly Speaker, Baleka Mbete's decision on whether the vote will be conducted via a secret ballot or not, the DA will be voting to remove President Zuma.

The motion, the eighth of its kind, was brought by the Democratic Alliance (DA), while the secret ballot was requested by the United Democratic Movement (UDM).

Up to 30,000 anti-Zuma protesters are expected to take to the streets of Cape Town tomorrow ahead of the vote to pressure MPs to vote the ANC president out of office. Speaker Baleka Mbete, who is also the ANC national chairwoman, told a news conference that her decision was meant to ensure the outcome of the vote was credible.

It said an earlier media report on security arrangements was clarified by Parliament which said the meeting referred to had been merely one of a series of joint coordination meetings to prepare for the 2018 State of the Nation Address.

The UDM, Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and the DA have argued that these guidelines make it almost impossible for the speaker to reject their request for a secret ballot.

In recent weeks, two ANC lawmakers who publicly said they meant to vote against Zuma were quickly censured by the party.

Mthembu accused Julius Malema, a former protege of Zuma who now leads the far-left Economic Freedom Fighters party, of wishful thinking for saying more than 60 ANC members in parliament will back the no-confidence vote.

Maimane says this is an opportunity for ruling party MPs to do the right thing.

"The people of South Africa look to parliament to give direction in challenging times".

"The Constitutional Court has indicated that a secret ballot is necessary where the prevailing atmosphere is toxifying or highly charged".

"We view this as part of the opposition party's desperate and high-risk stunts to capture the political limelight".

"The speaker must do this without fear or favour, it is with that in mind that this decision is also about putting the resilience of our democratic institution to test".

But he acknowledged recent criticism of the ANC, and the impact of a cabinet reshuffle in March when respected finance minister Pravin Gordhan was replaced with a Zuma loyalist. Almost all of the 149 opposition MPs have stated they will vote for Mr Zuma to be removed.
