Will Other Apple's iPhone Suppliers Follow Foxconn to the US?

LIVE STREAM: President Trump Holds Major Jobs Announcement

Tai Jeng-wu, CEO of Foxconn's Japanese unit Sharp Corp, said in June that six U.S. states were being evaluated for a possible location for a plant to make displays. Wisconsinites say it can be done.

Taiwanese electronics manufacturer Foxconn on Wednesday announced plans to build a $10 billion LCD display panel screen plant in Wisconsin, a deal President Donald Trump asserted would not have happened without his efforts. The intensity of the job drove workers to distraction and depression.

The news sent a jolt of excitement across Wisconsin, even among longtime Democratic critics of Walker. The fact Foxconn, a global leader, chose Wisconsin over every other state in America and every other place in the world should make us feel proud. "The beauty of manufacturing is, the productivity of those workers is so high that you can afford to pay them higher wages than if you're looking at something less capital-intensive".

LABOR STRIFE: Like other contract manufacturers, Foxconn has struggled to meet high safety and other standards expected of consumer electronics brands while keeping costs low.

While the announcement suggests that the new factory will be a production-line affair, Foxconn said as recently as December 2016 that it has plans to automate as much of its workforce as possible.

Walker said the plant was the largest economic development project in the state's history. "There are lots of workers in MI and there are lots of advanced manufacturing jobs in MI, and majority are hard to fill", said Stefanie Lenway, dean of the Opus College of Business at the University of St. Thomas in Minneapolis.

Walker said: "Foxconn is bringing 13,000 high-tech jobs to Wisconsin". "It's going to be either in Racine or Kenosha County", Kerkman said.

"It is absolutely critical to restart this road project to ensure the success of not just Foxconn, but the many other economic development opportunities that are planning to come our area", Wanggaard said in a statement.

If successful, the state also should expect to see knock-on effects of another big employer in the area, with suppliers to Foxconn cropping up as well as an array of services jobs to cater to the new residents.

Gov. Scott Walker called a Special Session of the Wisconsin State Legislature on Friday, July 28th to consider legislation that would bring Foxconn to Wisconsin.

Foxconn is committing to invest $10 billion in Wisconsin and create 13,000 jobs over six years with an average salary of nearly $60,000 a year.

Blank called Foxconn's decision to locate a plant in Wisconsin a "major leap forward for our state's economy", and Cross said he feels the UW System and the state are ready for the company.

It won't all be smooth sailing, though. The company noted in a statement that having the Wisconsin factory would help it better serve the major USA technology companies that are its clients.
