Putin announces that Russian Federation is expelling 755 U.S. diplomats, escalating tensions

US President Donald Trump will sign into law a bill imposing new sanctions on Russian Federation, the White House says.

"We had hoped that the situation will somehow change, but apparently if it changes, it won't be soon", Putin said in an interview televised on Rossiya 1, explaining why Moscow made a decision to retaliate.

Putin said more than 1,000 people are now employed at the Moscow embassy and three USA consulates in Russian Federation.

"We have waited long enough, hoping that the situation would perhaps change for the better", he said.

But Russia will likely retaliate in ways that go beyond the expulsion of U.S. diplomats and the seizure of American diplomatic recreation areas that took place Friday, said George Beebe, a former director of Russia analysis at the Central Intelligence Agency, and others. "As for other possible measures, or whether it is a lot or not, this is quite sensible from the point of view of the work of the diplomatic department".

U.S. and Russian flags hung at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow, Russia, Friday, July 28, 2017.

White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci said last week that Trump still doubts Moscow's involvement in the election campaign.

Ryabkov said on This Week that "if the USA side decides to move further towards further deterioration, we will answer".

Yes, it is, and I think this retaliation are long, long overdue.

But the USA intelligence community's conclusion that Putin interfered in the United States elections to get Trump elected, as well as a number of ongoing investigations into whether his campaign team colluded with Moscow, have made any concessions to Russian Federation politically toxic.

That vote-the culmination of a lengthy process that saw the sanctions initially approved in the Senate, then held up in the House, and later rewritten after substantial objections-now clears the way for the bill to proceed to the President's desk.

"More than a thousand people - diplomats and technical personnel - were working and are still working" at the US Embassy and consulates, Putin said in an interview with Rossia-24 television.

It also froze two embassy compounds - a Moscow summer house and a storage facility in the city - from August 1.

The sanctions bill would slap new sanctions on Russian Federation, as well as Iran and North Korea, and would set into law penalties President Barack Obama's administration imposed on Moscow in December, for its meddling in the United States election previous year and for its aggression in Ukraine.

"The vote puts Trump in an awkward position".

His vow to extend a hand of co-operation to Russian president Vladimir Putin has been met with resistance as sceptical politicians look to limit the president's leeway to go easy on Moscow over its meddling in the 2016 presidential election. "We are not doing anything to the detriment of the domestic developments or internal affairs of any country, the United States included".
