Quincy Jones wins millions from Michael Jackson estate

A jury in Los Angeles has awarded super producer Quincy Jones nearly $9.5 million in damages in Jones' lawsuit against the estate of Michael Jackson, Variety reports, finding that the estate underpaid Jones royalties he was due.

According to the Associated Press, Jones, 84, filed almost four years ago, seeking $30 million while Jackson's estate placed the figure at about $392,000.

In a statement, Weitzman and fellow attorney Zia Modabber said: "While the jury denied Quincy Jones $21 million - or more than two-thirds of what he demanded - from the estate of Michael Jackson, we still believe that giving him millions of dollars that he has no right to receive under his contracts is wrong". "It was about protecting the integrity of the work we all did in the recording studio and the legacy of what we created". "I view it not only as a victory for myself personally but for artists' rights overall", he concluded. They concluded: "Any amount above and beyond what is called for in his contracts is too much and unfair to Michael's heirs".

Jones worked with Jackson on three album's that were widely considered the singer's biggest successes: Off the Wall, Thriller and Bad.

After Jackson's death in 2009, his music became immensely popular again, and the estate pointed out that Mr. Jones had earned $8 million in the two years after Jackson's death. They argued during the trial that Jones was being "greedy and unethical". Jackson gave a youthful pop vitality to Jones, who was known primarily as a producer and arranger of jazz and film soundtracks.

The suit read that the songs used had been re-edited to deprive Jones of royalties and production fees, while Jackson's camp maintained he should be paid licensing fees only.

Another lawyer for MJJ Productions, Howard Weitzman, earlier told music magazine Billboard that the estate would likely appeal if Jones won a major sum.

"If he gets [major] money obviously there is a process post-trial", he said.

Issued by Columbia Pictures a few months after Jackson's death, the film documented preparations for what would have been Jackson's farewell tour.

Under the deals, for example, Jones is entitled to a share of net receipts from a "videoshow" of the songs.
