Jordan allows Embassy employees to return to Israel

A second Jordanian, who owned the rented property where the work took place, was accidentally shot dead by the guard, an official briefed on the incident told Reuters on condition he would not be identified by name or nationality.

Responding to public anger that the security guard was able to leave Jordan, Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi said the Israeli had been protected by diplomatic immunity, but he vowed to "get justice" for the victims of what he called a "criminal attack". After a visit to the Jordanian capital on Monday by the head of Israel's Shin Bet security service, Nadav Argaman, the Israeli government secured an agreement from Jordan to allow the return to Israel of the entire embassy staff, including the guard.

"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and security authorities are working with the Jordanian government over various channels", the Israeli foreign ministry said.

The incident comes amid tensions in the Muslim world over restrictions on worship imposed by Israel at a holy site in Jerusalem.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Jordan's King Abdullah spoke that afternoon by telephone.

It is one of the most serious incidents to affect ties between the two countries since they signed a peace treaty in 1994.

Masaadeh said the embassy employee's diplomatic immunity would not prevent him being charged and standing trial in Israel.

The incident is threatening to complicate the crisis over the holy site, which is administered by Muslim authorities under the auspices of Jordan.

Forty Jordanian parliamentarians have also demanded the Israeli embassy be permanently shut down and Jordan's ambassador to Israel be recalled.

Israel shut off the mosque compound on 14 July after Arab Israelis attacked and killed two police officers nearby.

Netanyahu said in his statement Monday that the cabinet would reconvene following its emergency session on Sunday to "ensure security and quiet on the Temple Mount, in the Old City and in Jerusalem as a whole". Palestinians allege they are an Israeli attempt to control the site and have launched mass protests.

Jordan and Israel have close security ties, but frequently clash over Israeli policies at the Jerusalem shrine.

Security cameras have now also been installed at a gateway leading to the site.

The Israeli embassy in the affluent Rabae district of Amman is protected by Jordanian gendarmes.
