Is the Trump admin threatening Alaska over health care politics?

Mark Wilson

Retribution: Each of Alaska's two senators received a phone call from the Trump administration telling them that the healthcare vote "had put Alaska's future with the administration in jeopardy", according to Alaska Dispatch News. "I tried to push back on behalf of all Alaskans..." We're facing some hard times and there's a lot of enthusiasm for the policies that Secretary Zinke and the president have been talking about with regard to our economy.

Sen. Dan Sullivan (R-Alaska) said the message was incredibly "troubling".

Sullivan told the Dispatch News that Zinke also called Sen.

Murkowski, who talked to Trump before her vote on Tuesday, said she has no problem with the administration's efforts to persuade her on the health care bill. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, for opposing a motion to proceed to open the health care debate, Zinke called her and her colleague Sen.

Trump has big plans to help big oil in Alaska - including Arctic offshore drilling, the Salmon-destroying Pebble Mine, and of course, opening up the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge for more energy exploration (a wet dream of the GOP for nearly 50 years). Murkowski, a Republican representing Alaska, has been crossing party lines, voting against the GOP's health care plans.

Murkowski could prove decisive this week as the GOP seeks to approve a so-called skinny Obamacare repeal in what will likely be a tight vote.

"I did have a conversation with the secretary, and he told me what I already knew, which was that the president wasn't pleased with the vote that I had taken, and I knew that", Murkowski told Cordes.

Murkowski, who was re-elected to a new six-year term last year, chairs the powerful Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, which has say over Interior business and nominations.

Here's hoping Murkowski remains strong on health care, but also a reminder that even a "good" Republican is still a Republican.

The senate debate over the health care bill and discussion of possible replacements in lieu of Obamacare will continue throughout the day on Wednesday.

Spokespeople for Murkowski and Sullivan, as well as the White House and Interior Department, did not immediately respond to CNBC's requests for comment. I don't have a hardship with that. "But the message was pretty clear".

"I am in a position where I am not looking to a re election until 2022, that's a long time away, and quite honestly, I don't think it's wise to be operating on a daily basis thinking about what a statement or a response that causes you to be fearful of your electoral prospects". "It was a hard conversation".

"Always. Tomorrow's another day", Shelby said.
