Centre rushes 12 additional NDRF teams to flood-hit Gujarat

Six people have so far died due to rains, while authorities have shifted over 7,000 people to safety in the past two days across the state.

More than 25,000 people were evacuated as of Monday night after a bitter spell of incessant rainfall battered many districts across Gujarat.

In all, the entirety of Gujarat has registered 534 mm of rain, which is 66 percent of its seasonal average of 810 mm. Two teams of Border Security Force too have been pressed into service.The Met Department has predicted heavy showers in many parts of the state in the coming 48 hours. Personnel from the Army and the BSF have been also been deployed.

"In addition, more than 390 engineers of the Indian Army are using assault boats to traverse the inundated areas, while more than 28 Army medical and veterinary teams are providing immediate first aid to the affected persons and animals", it said.

Official sources said that the 36-hour long rains have seen North Gujarat receive over 95 per cent of the season's rainfall. In the month of June, the Gujarat received 126 mm of rains while in the first three days, the state has received 289.75 mm of rainfall.

These places were followed by Umergam of Valsad (58mm), Deodar of Banaskantha (55 mm), Kaprada of Valsad (53 mm), Idar of Sabarkantha (52 mm), Tharad of Banaskantha (50 mm), Poshina of Sabarkantha (50mm), Siddhpur of Patan (48mm) and Vijaynagar of Sabarkantha (47mm).

Apart from Gujarat, some districts of adjacent Rajasthan experienced heavy rains.

"Three teams each from the NDRF base in Ghaziabad and Mundali (Odisha), and four teams from Araokkonam in Tamil Nadu are being airlifted to strengthen relief and rescue efforts".

During a rescue operation in flood-hit Gujarat, an Indian Air Force (IAF) helicopter on Tuesday winched a man, who was clinging onto an electric pole amidst gushing flood waters.

Heavy showers pounded parts of Maharashtra, West Bengal, Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan, and affected normal life in the metro cities of Kolkata and Mumbai.
