Police Accuse Utah Parents of Feeding Opioid Pills to Newborn Baby

Colby Glen Wilde 29 and Lacey Dawn Christenson 26

Officers said Lacey Dawn Christenson, 26, of Elk Ridge, Utah, used heroin and prescription painkillers heavily during her pregnancy and her daughter was born addicted to drugs as a result.

Other drugs, including Suboxone - which is used for addiction treatment, were found in the home.

A drug test showed the couple's biological sons had methamphetamine in their systems, while their infant daughter tested positive for methamphetamine, heroin and morphine. The couple reportedly put the crushed drugs on their fingertips, then spread it over the infant's gums.

On June 26, 2017, a few minutes before 3:00 PM, Spanish Fork Police responded to a report of a theft in progress at Walmart in their city.

Witnesses told law enforcement they saw the suspect take items from a shelf and then return them to customer service as if he had purchased them.

As he was leaving the store, Wilde was approached by loss prevention employees.

With his two-month-old daughter in the vehicle seat, he then was arrested and faced charges of drug distribution, child endangerment, driving while intoxicated and without insurance.

Police had been in the property after Wilde, 29, was arrested for shoplifting. The mother of the baby, who was also in the store, was arrested on an outstanding warrant.

The couple told the police they learned a method from other friends to avoid hospital staff from learning their baby's addiction.

Police blocked Wilde off as he tried to drive away, took him into custody, and charged him with driving without insurance, DUI, child abuse, possession of heroin and methamphetamine, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

While the parents were in jail, authorities were contacted by a woman asked to care for the pets at Wilde and Christenson's home.

Besides the newborn, Christenson's other three children, ages 8, 4 and 2, lived in the house with the couple, the Sheriff's Office said.

The statement revealed Christenson was still inside the store with her three sons. Wilde picked up the vehicle seat and continued running, but hit a pillar and dropped the seat again, he said. Two boys also tested positive for drugs, according to the police officials. The parents of the other three children are Wilde and Christenson.

Police said they obtained a search warrant on June 28 and found drug paraphernalia in many areas of the home, including next to a baby bassinet and a child's sippy cup.

Wilde pleaded guilty Tuesday to charges of child endangerment, a third-degree felony, and drug possession, a class B misdemeanor. After being released, the couple was accused of continuing to use methamphetamine and opiates. Cannon said when deputies served it on Tuesday, they found Wilde inside his residence smoking heroin.

"But there is plenty of evidence that the drug gets diverted; police seize it, addicts talk about how easy it is to buy".

By July 5, both were released on bail.

Wilde fled the scene - after dropping a vehicle seat holding his infant child multiple times - but was arrested a short time later, according to police, who charged him with driving under the influence of drugs, possession of heroin and methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving without insurance, theft and child abuse. $10,000 cash bail has been set for both parents.
