Virgil van Dijk left out of Southampton's pre-season squad

Liverpool will not bid for Virgil van Dijk unless Southampton allow them to do

Today, the latest on Liverpool's pursuit of Virgil van Dijk...

But rather than try to force the issue, Reds officials are waiting on the Saints to make a firm decision and will be ready if they are given any encouragement to make a bid.

Dijk, 26, who is seeking a move away from the St. Mary's has been linked to Liverpool despite Saints boss, Mauricio Pellegrino insisting the player is not for sale.

The Spaniard, who played for Liverpool in 2005 before joining Rafael Benítez's backroom staff, questioned whether the player is now "100 per-cent" there "psychologically" as he ordered him to train separately from the club's first-team squad.

Pellegrino, who replaced Claude Puel as head coach of Southampton this summer, is said to be desperate to keep Van Dijk, but the 45-year-old has left the centre-back out of the squad that will travel to France.

In the Netherlands, the option exists for players to go to an arbitration board if they feel as though they are being treated unfairly, though that does not exist in England meaning Van Dijk's hopes rest on Southampton calling a truce with Liverpool.

'When I was talking with him, the boy said that he is not available to play because he wants to leave.

"I want to help the squad, I want to help Virgil, but we need a player involved in every training session, not just with the body, but with the mind on the pitch with the rest of the players".

Van Dijk made 21 Premier league appearances for Southampton last season, as well as featuring six times in the Europa League.
