Bears LB Jerrell Freeman saves man at Austin airport

Jerrell Freeman

Chicago Bears linebacker Jerrell Freeman found himself in a spot that a lot of people find themselves in when they're in Austin, Texas: he had a hankering for some brisket.

Freeman originally recounted the tale on his Twitter account and then gave further details to the Chicago Tribune, recalling how he saw the man, later identified as Marcus Ryan, looking "like he had forgotten something and was about to go running for it".

As for the rest of Freeman's day, his delayed flight eventually took off for Chicago, where he was heading for the Bears' training camp.

"[Marcus Ryan] went around the table and started to look a little frantic", Freeman told the Tribune.

It started with Freeman having one last unhealthy meal before flying to Chicago and reporting to training camp. I'm thinking, 'Man, this is odd. After one woman's attempts to dislodge the food from Matthew Ryan's throat by using the Heimlich maneuver were unsuccessful, the linebacker sprung into action and on his second attempt managed to free Ryan's airway. "I asked him if he was all right and he shook his head like 'No!'" Just saved my guy Marcus Ryan's life by using the Heimlich maneuver in the middle of the Austin airport! "I think you just saved my life, man!' It was insane", Freman said.

Both parties reacted to the life-saving event on social media. According to the linebacker, Ryan continued his brisket sandwich after surviving the choking episode. "You can't get between a man and his brisket".

Freeman's bio on the National Football League's website states he went to University High School in Waco and University of Mary Hardin-Baylor.

"Crazy", Freeman said. "Hey, I guess that was some good brisket".
