Trump helps commission USS Gerald R. Ford, newest aircraft carrier

The vessel is outfitted with touchscreen navigation display in place of a traditional throttle and is equipped with a reactor plant that can power the ship for up to 20 years without refueling.

"Certainly we've taken a hard look at the technology", said Capt. Gaut, McCormack's second-in-command.

The U.S. Navy on Saturday with the help of President Donald Trump will commission its most powerful warship yet: the USS Gerald Ford.

The president said the warship serves as a "deterrent that keeps us from having to fight" but added, if conflict does arise, "it will always end the same way".

U.S. President Donald Trump will deliver the principal address at Naval Station Norfolk, the department said in a statement. Construction began in 2008 and was initially slated for completion in September of 2015, but ran into delays.

The Navy's newest vessel is the lead ship in a new class of aircraft carriers.

"There is no one, absolutely no one, who would be prouder of the commissioning of this mighty ship than the president of the United States, Gerald R. Ford", she said.

Addressing Trump, Mattis said, "Mr. president, you will send this ship in harm's way and [it] will happily sail in harm's way for you, for our nation and for what we stand for".

The Ford class will include two more planned ships, the John F. Kennedy and Enterprise. The Navy veteran's presidency was largely about restoring trust in the Oval Office, and that's represented in the Ford Foundation's motto: "Integrity at the helm".

The air wing to support the Ford could add more personnel to the ship, which is created to house more than 4,600 crew members. "We will win", Trump said.

Despite the challenges that come with developing and testing a carrier that is first in its class, commanding officers touted the expertise demonstrated by the Ford's crew members in operating its advanced systems.

Numerous crew members have been with the carrier since the earliest stages of development - supplementing a lack of experience out at sea with a deep breadth of knowledge about the new technology that is expected to set the standard for the future of the Ford-class.

"Our greatest weapon is all of you", Trump told the crowd attending the commissioning ceremony. In addition, the carrier hasn't yet been cleared to launch fighters carrying extra fuel in wing tanks because of software issues with the new electromagnetic catapult system that cause excessive stresses at launch.
