Audi offers diesel emissions upgrade for 850000 cars

Audi announces retrofit programme for 850000 diesel cars

German luxury carmaker Audi, a Volkswagen subsidiary, issued a voluntary recall of up to 850,000 diesel vehicles on Friday, saying it would help reduce engine emissions following a similar move by rival Daimler.

Volkswagen, Daimler and BMW are being investigated by Germany's Federal Cartel Office on suspected antitrust collusion over decades on technology relating to exhaust gas measures on diesel vehicles.

Daimler which owns the Mercedes-Benz brand, declined to comment.

The German carmaker is to offer its customers in Europe and other markets (except the United States of America and Canada) a retrofit program for cars with EU5 and EU6 diesel engines.

German news magazine Der Spiegel reports today that the country's auto industry "has been discussing the technology, costs, suppliers and even the exhaust gas purification of its diesel vehicles in secret working circles". "There seems to be a never ending story of bad news about the industry's bad behavior".

Around 200 employees sitting in 60 industry committees discussed vehicle development, brakes, petrol and diesel engines, clutches and transmissions as well as exhaust treatment systems, Der Spiegel reported, citing a letter sent to cartel authorities.

The service is likewise being provided to Porsche- and Volkswagen- branded automobiles using the same six- and eight-cylinder engines, Audi stated. They need the fuel to have a chance at meeting increasingly tightening environmental targets.

Pressure on vehicle manufacturers in Germany and elsewhere has been growing steadily since Volkswagen's admission in 2015 that it installed systems in 11 million diesel-fueled cars worldwide to defeat regulatory emissions tests. Cities from Munich to Mexico City have all made efforts to ban diesel cars from their roads. Germany's Federal Cartel Office is investigating the matter, and previously looked at six companies a year ago regarding collusion on steel prices. "In the current environment, that's a another hit".
