Terminally ill British baby Charlie Gard granted U.S. 'legal permanent residency'

Honorary contract over experimental treatment for Charlie Gard

The legal battle over Charlie's right to live has sparked huge controversy all over the globe.with protesters in London demanding the British courts allow Charlie's parents to decide their baby's fate, not the government's health care system.

CNN reports that on Tuesday, the House Committee on Appropriations voted unanimously on an amendment to give the family permanent residency in the United States, though it will still need to be voted on by the full House and Senate to pass. A ruling is expected on Charlie's future next week, according to the Standard.

But he was unable to persuade the London hospital's clinical team who believe it is kinder to turn off 11-month old Charlie's life support.

Doctors from Great Ormond Street Hospital, where Charlie is hooked up to life support machines, have said the tot will die from the illness.

"It would be entirely wrong for him to be transferred without my being involved", Justice Francis said Friday, according to the Daily Mail.

He added that if the hospital did change its mind to allow the baby to go, he would be "bound to agree".

Dr. Michio Hirano of Columbia University Medical Center, who specializes in rare genetic diseases, arrived in London and will discuss Charlie's condition with doctors treating him and independent specialists.

It is an experimental new treatment taken as an oral medication.

The American neuroscientist Dr. Michio Hirano could not persuade the United Kingdom doctors that something could be done to prolong or save Charlie's life and flew back to NY last night.

Hirano and his colleague spent six hours with Charlie on Monday, familiarizing themselves with the details of his case and examining the child personally.

"Our gorgeous baby boy is still stable". "We are not bad parents, we are there for him all the time, we are completely devoted to him and he's not in pain and suffering, and I promise everyone I would not sit there and watch my son in pain and suffering, I couldn't do it".

Charlie Gard's parents have released a new picture of their little boy where he appears to be looking at a toy to prove to doctors he is not blind.

Don't worry, though, these parents are not about to give up.

Which hospitals have offered to treat Charlie?

High Court judge Nicholas Francis said he was "open-minded about the evidence" to come. They argue that will give a definite answer whether Charlie's brain damage is irreversible or not.

It has never been tested on any human or animal.

Ms Yates said last night that Charlie was set to undergo more tests.

"Being able to hear the heartbeat ... we had this gut feeling of there has to be something - I mean, a doctor may say it, but she's moving".

He had an MRI scan and an electroencephalogram (EEG) to monitor brain activity for more than 30 minutes. "They love him in a way an institution - a hospital and government - cannot", said Dannenfelser.

He is due to stage further hearings later this month following this week's specialist gathering.
