Tennis legend John McEnroe, a presenter and commentator on the BBC's Wimbledon team, was paid £150,000 to £199,999 but Martina Navratilova did not make the list.

The highest-paid female star with a BAME background is BBC news presenter Mishal Hussain, who received between £200,000 and £250,000.

Other BBC colleagues also had fun comebacks to the list, with one political correspondent saying she was going to sell badges for those who didn't earn enough to make the cut.

And of course, I'll admit here that my knowledge of BBC television personalities perhaps isn't the best, but with the exception of Mishal Husain, who sits in the £200,000 to £249,999 bracket, numerous stars cited as being on the highest-paid lists are white.

It's important to note that numerous BBC's high-profile stars aren't included in this list.

Topping the list is Chris Evans who was paid at least £2.2m by the BBC past year while Gary Lineker was paid more than £1.75m and Graham Norton over £850,000. But, Claudia is responsible for two more BBC shows, including a radio show. In fact, for every hour that anyone consumes the BBC, they're paying an average of less than seven pence - brilliant value compared to any other form of entertainment.

"Ultimately, people should judge the BBC on the quality of the programmes and services they get for their 40p a day". I blame my agent and the other TV channels that pay more.

He receives a salary between £400,000 - £449,000 and works with BBC One, Radio Ulster and Radio 5 Live.

Its BBC annual report and accounts 2016-17 also showed that the employee wage bill has increased for the organisation's 21,271 staff members, rising from £990 million in 2016 to £1 billion in 2017.

Compare this to the highest earning man, Chris Evans, who takes home around £2.5 million for hosting the Radio 2 breakfast show and "Top Gear" a year ago.

He was followed by Gary Lineker, Graham Norton and Jeremy Vine - in a list that revealed a gender pay gap and a lack of diversity that BBC Director General Tony Hall said must be addressed.

Highest paid stars would be limited at earning 20 times the amount of the lowest paid staff. "But I totally understand why people would want to know".

Emily Maitlis, for example, reportedly did not qualify to feature on the list because her salary is under the £150k top earner bracket that acted as the requirement for inclusion. The broadcaster fought against the list being published, but was forced by the government as part of its new 11-year royal charter.

Asked about the gender pay gap, with two thirds of the top earners expected to be men, he said: "I think this the beginning of redress I would imagine".

Then Hall pivoted, touting the BBC's dedication to parity in representation as well as pay.

Admitting that some salaries come in at over £150,000, Hall said "we need to employ the very best - stars, great presenters, writers, actors, correspondents".
