Mayawati threatens to resign from RS

Parliament House in New Delhi

Mayawati added that Dalits, Muslims and other backward sections of the society are facing oppression in the Modi regime. "But when I am not allowed to speak then why should I stay here", she asked while speaking the media after coming out of the Rajya Sabha. "It gives her time to build her support base". On Monday, while voting for the presidential election, she had said that whoever wins - Kovind or Meira Kumar - a Dalit would occupy the President's post. If she resigns, the BSP will lose a Rajya Sabha member which in turn will be BJP's gain as the latter is in the minority.

Earlier, there was a din in the House as Mayawati spoke about "atrocities on Dalits" in Saharanpur of Uttar Pradesh.

BSP supremo Mayawati resigned from the Rajya Sabha today. Election next week of a Dalit President who hails from Uttar Pradesh will dwarf her stature. When she was UP chief minister, she was member of the Legislative Council and at present, a Rajya Sabha member which was to expire in April 18 next year.

Mayawati had tried to raise the issues of Dalit atrocities in Uttar Pradesh and the violence in Saharanpur.

The opposition parties would meet every day before the start of the proceedings to decide which issues will raised on the specific day.

BJP general secretary Bhupender Yadav said the people will not be misled by her.

Reacting to her announcement to quit the seat, senior BJP leader Dr Subramaniam Swamy said, "If she resigns, the seat will come to us as we have more than 70 per cent of Assembly strength in the state legislature". By resigning now, she can tell them that by doing so she upheld their pride and Parliament was not a fit place for her. She has lost people's mandate. "Going by the precedence, resignation has to be a one liner and there should not be any reasoning as given by Mayawati".

Meanwhile, RJD leader Yadav, who is facing considerable heat from investigating agencies, called the BJP an anti-Dalit party and has offered his party's support to Mayawati to send her to the upper house again.
