Matthews : Stage victor blasts 'unsportsmanlike' Degenkolb

"We took it from the word go, attacking the whole climb to make it hard for Quick-Step to shut us down", said Matthews, who also won a stage on the Tour past year.

FACT OF THE DAY: Ireland's Dan Martin lost 51 seconds to the other main contenders after being caught at the wrong end of a peloton split, following Team Sky's acceleration in the crosswinds.

Matthews paid glowing tribute to his team who turned the last part of the stage into a team time trial - setting an incredible pace over the final 30km.

"It was not very sportsmanlike".

"Once we heard that there were splits in the peloton we were all really motivated to push on and extend the gap", he said.

Safely in the front group were the three riders occupying the podium positions this morning - overall leader Froome, Astana's Fabio Aru and Romain Bardet of AG2R-La Mondiale.

Sunweb were instrumental in causing the early split that left Kittel back down the road, attacking from the off.

Martin, in a second chase group, lost almost a minute in the final 20km and dropped to more than two minutes behind Froome - a massive loss on a day that should've been quiet for GC.

They may not have known it at the time, but they were capitalising on a Quick-Step Floor team weakened by illness, and unable to defend both Kittel in green and Martin in the general classification.

"I kept attacking on the first climb, I felt quite good and when I got to the top of climb I heard Kittel was distanced by nearly a minute. For me, that was the goal, feeling the way I'm feeling now and I'm looking forward to the next two days now".

"He has his game plan and we have ours and we'll see which one is best in Paris".
