Woman destroys $200000 of art when her selfie goes wrong

CCTV footage shows tourists carefully perusing a room decorated with dozens of rectangular pillars at renowned artist Simon Birch's exhibit at The 14th Factory

The incident took place at the 14th Factory in Los Angeles, California, two weeks back when a woman knocked over a portion of Hong Kong-based British artist Simon Birch's "Hypercaine" exhibit while trying to take a selfie. Around the 10 second mark, you can see a woman in the upper right stoop down for her ill-fated selfie and everything goes wrong.

The woman squats down to take a selfie before losing her balance, knocking over one of the pedestals in the process, causing a domino effect with other pedestals resulting in damage worth $200,000, according to Hyperallergic. The surveillance video shows her crouching down next to an exhibit titled 'Hypercaine' (2016). The approximate cost of damage is $200,000."However, since the video was released on YouTube, a lot of viewers have expressed their doubt about its legitimacy".

Three of artist Simon Birch's sculptures were "permanently damaged" due to the women's actions at The 14th Factory gallery, it was claimed.

The destroyed work of art was a collaboration between Birch, Yu, Gabriel Chan and Jacob Blitzer. The exhibition is being held in an old warehouse, and numerous artworks are "photogenic" and created to be "social", writes the Los Angeles Times.

If you are down in Los Angeles, the exhibition runs until the end of the month sans pedestals. Or maybe she read this review from the L.A. Times, which boldly predicted the inclination towards selfie-taking in the social-media-oriented show. "Now that it got online, we would rather direct the sudden attention away from the unfortunate event and to the art in The 14th Factory space and the artists behind them".
