3 takeaways from Kentavious Caldwell-Pope deal

Lakers Waive David Nwaba

A bit of kismet got the Lakers exactly what they were looking for in this year's free agency.

Nwaba, who was on a non-guaranteed contract, was cut from the roster in order to clear the necessary cap space to sign Kentavious Caldwell-Pope to his reported 18 million dollar contract. Caldwell-Pope is a strong defender, exactly what the Lakers need at one of their guard spots. Signing the free agent could fulfill the Lakers' desire to acquire a point guard on a one-year deal.

Nonetheless, the Nets still have almost $16.5 million remaining in salary cap and have the second-most among teams who were left in pursuit of the shooting guard. He was considered the best remaining unrestricted free agent on the market after the Pistons renounced his contract last week.

Caldwell-Pope played well this season until receiving a vicious pick from Golden State Warriors center Zaza Pachulia, which caused Caldwell-Pope to miss four games with a shoulder injury.

In the 39 games before the injury, he was averaging 14.9 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3 assists, hitting 40 percent on 3-pointers. Caldwell-Pope has a lot to offer to a team and is someone who has been able to stay relatively healthy, only missing a handful of games. If he continues to improve his 3-point shot, he could become one of the NBA's better two-way players. Rondo and the Lakers were linked together earlier in the offseason. No matter what happens, the Lakers added a young, talented shooting guard to help Ball's transition to the National Basketball Association. There had also been significant interest from several other teams across the league.

The Lakers now have $17 million in cap space but can get to $18.3 million in space.

Los Angeles is also reportedly still hoping to sign former All-Star point guard Rajon Rondo to a one-year deal by using their $4.3 million room exception that is provided to teams with salary-cap space as an additional spending asset. Time will tell, but both players could carve out nice roles with the Lakers in 2017-18.
